Applicant's academic qualifications will not be considered during student selection process. Programme of Study (1 Year Full-Time): Fundamentals in Programming (Semester 1 and 2) The aim of this unit is to introduce the students to the art of computer programming using visual basic 6.0 as the programming language. Emphasis will be on programming logic and the mastering of the basic elements of structured programming. Most lectures will be based on hands on experience, with live demonstrations in class. Ample code will be presented to students, with a number of worksheets for the students to work and complete. A small project is expected to be completed by students, which will be continually developed step by step during the course. The duration of this course would be over two semesters. Creative Thinking + (Semester 1 and 2) Creativity Thinking + is designed to stimulate the students' personal and intellectual development. The range of topics suggested for this unit will ensure that the students are equipped with the necessary skills that will be required to establish and maintain relationships on a personal and professional basis. Throughout the unit the students will experience a balanced combination of theory and practice. Role plays and case studies will portray various scenarios that the students might have to face at their future workplace. This unit is highly interactive. Participation on the student's behalf is expected. This is to be encouraged through the use of guided discussions, surveys and questionnaires and other methods that deliberately induce the students to form an opinion and/or question situations in particular. This unit is not academically oriented, although a strong element of participation is expected throughout the programme. This could be achieved through the use of project based performance appraisals. The transfer of the skills learnt through this programme is critical to the success of the programme. Lecturers of other subjects are therefore encouraged to implement the skills learnt by the students in their subjects. Fundamental Concepts of Computing (Semester 1) To give candidates a broad but secure foundation in the fundamental concepts of computing so that they will be able to make effective and knowledgeable judgements about the use of standard computer systems in business. It provides the basic foundations of mathematics at 'O' level standard, and encourages the student to think and use his/her mind to solve new classes of problems especially within the ICT sector. Accreditation and Progression: On successful completion of the course, students are awarded the MCAST Foundation Certificate in Computing. Students may then proceed to the MCAST/BTEC First Diploma for IT Practitioners (Code 03/05/02) that is currently being offered by the college.
